The "grid" system is popular in off the shelf database programs that have been adapted to be called "cellar software" and if you're happier working in this format or if you'd just prefer to manipulate your data or extract reports using this format then you can.
WineBase not only supports exporting to a spreadsheet but also allows you to import your spreadsheet data back into the program.
From a spreadsheet you can also reformat and export to just about any other format available which allows you to use your WineBase data just about anywhere.
A Palm/hand held/portable PC or similar that supports standard database or spreadsheets is one application that comes to mind.
